While recently blogging about a random Cubs pitcher, Pat Perry, I became immersed in articles from 1988 and 1989. This is the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Cubs “Boys of Zimmer,” a team that reached the postseason after a five year hiatus. This daily series will look back at Chicago Tribune articles and columns from 30 years ago, day by day.
The Chicago Tribune ran a special feature in the February 14, 1989 edition. It was a top ten ranking of the all-time best Chicago Cubs.
Jerome Holtzman created the list, and you read that right. Gabby Hartnett over Ernie Banks?!?!
In the article it was written Banks was a great ball player. But, Hartnett was a great, great ball player. Here’s more on Holtzman, a legendary baseball sportswriter.
And the top ten all-time Cubs in the eyes of Jerome Holtzman as of February 1989.
